December is here

The month of December has finally arrived! Blowing in some snow and the Christmas spirit!

With the Christmas season approaching we are planning a few fun activities for our classroom. The students in class 403 have been writing Christmas stories and they would like to read them to their younger peers in the school. Therefore for the first activity we’ll be reading stories to the grade one students. This activity will take place on the week of December 14th. To make this activity a little more festive the students should bring in a Christmas hat.
Finally on December 17th two activities will take place. Due to the demand of many of my students I would like to have a FIVE dollar gift exchange, or Secret Santa. It is important during the holidays to emphasize the theme of sharing and giving. The gift exchange is a fun activity that will bring our classroom closer together. The students have already picked their “secret” friend, they need to keep this name a secret until next week. We will also have a Christmas breakfast in our classroom on December 17th. Each student will be responsible to bring in something to share with the class for a light breakfast.

Thank you once again for all your help and cooperation, have yourself a safe and joyful Christmas.

Halloween Safety Rules

It is very important for children to be safe while having fun during Trick or Treat time. Here are some important Halloween Safety Rules for your children to follow so that they will have a happy and safe Halloween.
1. Children under the age of 12 should always go Trick or Treating with a grown-up.
2. If you are over age 12, it is much safer to go with a group of friends with an adult supervisor, instead of by yourself.
3. Always put strips of reflective tape on your costume so that cars can see you.
4. Never go to a house or apartment that is dark.
5. Never go inside a stranger's house, apartment or car.
6. Wear make-up instead of a mask so that you can see properly.
7. Never wear a costume that you can trip on. Make sure the costume does not cover your shoes so that you can walk easily.
8. Do NOT zig zag across the road. Instead, walk up one side of the road and visit the houses there, then cross the road safely at a crosswalk and go down the other side of the street.
9. If there are no sidewalks, always walk facing the traffic.
10. Do not walk across lawns and yards or take "short-cuts", in case you trip in the dark. Use sidewalks and paths leading to homes.
11. Always be home at a time agreed upon by your parents.
12. Wear a watch so that you will be home on time.
13. Pin your name, address and phone number inside your costume in case you get lost or scared.
14. Carry a glow stick or flashlight with a new battery so that you can see better in the dark.
15. Do not go into elevators or stairways in apartment buildings. Most apartment buildings set up "candy areas" in their hallway for "Trick or Treat".
16. Only go to houses in the neighborhood that your parents have said you can go to.
17. Never carry a treat bag that is too big for you or one that drags on the ground. Carry a small bag instead, then when it is full, dump it into a bigger bag carried by an older person.
18. Make sure that fake knives, swords, and guns are made from cardboard or other flexible materials to avoid accidental injury or worse, have them mistaken for the real thing!
19. Do not go near any pets or animals that you do not know. They sometimes get scared of the costumes too!
20. If someone is bothering you, run to the nearest well lit house that has lots of people there.
21. Never ever eat any treats until your parents have checked them!

Thought of the day

The Charlie Schulz Philosophy

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip.

You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just ponder on them.
Just read the e-mail straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
4 Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.
These are no second-rate achievers.
They are the best in their fields.
But the applause dies..
Awards tarnish.
Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!!
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials...The most money...or the most awards.
They simply are the ones who care the most

A new school year!

Dear parents of students in class 403,

Welcome to the new school year. It is going to be a great one, I am sure. I have been looking forward to
teaching this wonderful group of children and have been planning all summer for their return. Grade 4 is a very important grade. We gently help them along the journey to the increased expectations and self-reliance required in cycle 3. They seem to change so very much during this year.

In our classroom, we will be very busy with lots of hands-on activities, collaborative projects, creative writing in both English and French; math and language games, and spelling lessons. This year we will master the basic multiplication and division facts. Daily reading at home will be expected in both English and French, as will monthly book projects. All written work must be completed in cursive handwriting. Of course, each child will be working at his or her own level and that continues to be appropriate.
Students are expected to be
in uniform attire every day. They may need a bit of reminding at first. Plan now for the cooler weather and make sure your child has a school jacket or sweater and long pants.

We are all very lucky to belong to Pierre de Coubertin School. I truly believe in our approach to education
and the benefits we brings to our students. Have you ever met a nicer bunch of kids? They make teaching here an absolute pleasure. I am so happy to be teaching this class. If you’d like to get in touch with me contact me at school or email me at mc_lopez2003@yahoo.ca. I look forward to hearing from you, have a great school year!
